The Hessian tax authorities
The financial administration - also known as the tax administration - is the part of the public administration responsible for setting and collecting taxes. The financial administration of the Federal Republic of Germany is divided between the federal government and the federal states. The Federal Ministry of Finance is the highest authority in the Federal Tax Administration. Below this, there are a number of higher authorities that fulfil special tasks for which the federal government is responsible.
The Hessian Finance Administration is a state authority. It is characterised by a three-tier authority structure. The highest tax authority is the Hessian Ministry of Finance, subordinate to it is the Frankfurt am Main Regional Finance Directorate as the central authority. The most important service units are the 35 Hessian tax offices.
Around 11,000 employees work in the Hessian tax authorities to collect and administer taxes.
