Land register; application for a name change or change of name

If the name or company name of the (legal) person entered in the land register as the owner or other authorized party changes, e.g. due to marriage, you can notify the land register office, enclosing appropriate proof, and apply for the name entered in the land register to be corrected.

A change of name, for example due to marriage, death or adoption, is registered by the land registry at the request of one of the parties involved. The prerequisite is proof of the name change, for which the law does not impose any specific requirements.

Possible proof can be

• the submission of the marriage certificate,
• submission of an extract from the family register,
• submission of a certificate from the registry office confirming the change of name,
• the presentation of an identity card,
• the electronic transmission of an electronic proof of identity contained in the identity card (§ 18 of the Identity Card Act) or
• a reference to the already updated population register.

In individual cases, the land registry may require further documents to register the change of name.
