Driving license; application due to expiry of validity

The validity of the new driving licenses will be limited to 15 years. The time limit only applies to the document, not the driving license itself.

Driving licenses issued after January 19, 2013 must be renewed every 15 years. Regular medical examinations or other tests are generally not associated with the document exchange. Only the document and the photograph are updated.

By 19.01.2033, all driving licenses issued before 19.01.2013 (both the old grey or pink driving licenses in paper form and the permanent card driving licenses issued before this date) must gradually be exchanged for the new, temporary card driving license. Staggered exchange periods must be observed for this.

For certain driving license categories, different regulations apply with regard to the validity of the driving license (e.g. category C "trucks" and category D "buses").
