Geological information and data; retrieval
The State Office for the Environment carries out the state geological survey by means of its own geological investigations and on the basis of geological investigations by third parties and ensures that the data is made available to the public.
Description
The State Geological Service of Bavaria is a department of the State Office for the Environment (LfU). As the responsible authority, it carries out the geological survey of the state. Together with information and data from third parties, it makes the findings available to the public, specialist users and authorities.
The diverse product range includes specialist/special publications as well as series of publications, site information, expert opinions, statements, laboratory reports and much more.
The several hundred thousand boreholes and outcrops with geological profiles in the LfU's soil information system as well as the many maps and their explanations on various specialist topics and scales are of great importance for many questions.
Geological, pedological, hydrogeological, geophysical, geotechnical, reservoir geological/raw material geological information and data are collected, saved and made publicly available by the LfU.
Where possible, publications are made via the digital offerings on the LfU website and in the UmweltAtlas Bayern and the publication store. Depending on the type and scope, the data is available for download or can be requested from the LfU data center.
For objects or materials that cannot be digitized, such as drill cores, soil/rock samples or collection items, interested parties from science, industry, administration or private individuals can submit requests to the LfU.
The information and data mentioned form an essential information basis for the use and protection of the natural environment, for the assessment and prevention of natural hazards (geohazards), for spatial planning and regional planning as well as for geoscientific research. Examples of important fields of application include Nature conservation and landscape management, exploration, development and protection of groundwater resources, development and use of thermal energy stored underground (geothermal energy), exploration and safeguarding of mineral raw materials and fossil fuels, subsoil evaluation for building construction and civil engineering, evaluation of the subsoil of landfill sites, risk assessment of landslides, mudflows, rockfalls, sinkholes, flooding or earthquakes, land use in agriculture and forestry or soil protection.
The point and area data provided by the LfU enables developers, planners, specialist tradesmen and drilling companies to explore possible or favorable areas or the subsoil for various purposes and/or to carry out an (initial indicative) assessment of the planned site.
In addition to providing recently collected information and data, the LfU is also working on the digitization and accessibility of analogue archives and collections from various disciplines, which means that the range of services is constantly being expanded.
