Firewood; application for a permit for self-collection

To cover your own private firewood requirements, you can apply for so-called self-cutting wood from communal forest owners.

As energy costs continue to rise and for ecological reasons, private households are becoming increasingly interested in using firewood to generate energy. Private individuals can purchase standing, lying or pre-cut wood (also crown wood) and use it for their own needs.

Private and municipal forest owners usually offer firewood for independent processing, which cannot be used for sale to the timber industry after harvesting.

The self-harvester acquires a wood purchase right from the forest owner for a certain quantity of firewood or is allocated a demarcated area for firewood processing by the forest owner. Payment is made directly to the forest owner.

Working independently in the forest is not without danger. Self-producers of firewood must therefore generally meet the following requirements:

• Proof of personal liability insurance
• Proof of a chainsaw course that is recognized by the agricultural employers' liability insurance association
• Certified protective equipment consisting of helmet with ear and face protection, gloves, signal jacket, cut protection trousers and well profiled cut protection boots.

When processing firewood, the instructions of the forest owner must always be followed!
