Anyone who drills a borehole, builds a well or carries out other work that penetrates so deeply into the ground that it could affect the groundwater must report this to the authorities.

The obligation to notify is generally incumbent on the building owner. If the client commissions a drilling company, the latter must inform the district administrative authority.

Notification can be made in writing or, depending on the district administrative authority, also electronically.

The notification is reviewed by the responsible district administrative authority, if necessary with the involvement of the water management authority. An examination is carried out with regard to restrictions on earth excavation at the planned location or whether the procedure must be discontinued.

As part of this review, a decision is also made as to whether further procedures need to be carried out in addition to the notification, e.g. a permit procedure under water law.

The relevant result is communicated in writing by the responsible authority.

The district administrative authority must be notified at least 4 weeks before the start of the work.

In addition to the notification to the district administrative authority in accordance with the Water Resources Act/Bavarian Water Act, the State Office for the Environment (LfU) must also be notified of all ground excavations (boreholes, wells, etc.).

The LfU must be notified at least two weeks before the start of the investigation. The LfU offers an online application for digital notification (see "Related links" and "Related services"). After completion of the work, all data obtained must be submitted to the LfU.
