Pilot's license; application for a permit or authorization to operate an aircraft

The acquisition of a license to fly aircraft requires theoretical and practical training. The training can only be carried out at an approved or declared training organization (flight school) and imparts knowledge and practical skills in aviation law, human performance, meteorology, communication, the basics of flying, operating procedures, flight performance and flight planning, general aircraft knowledge and navigation. The permit is only issued after passing the theoretical and practical examination at the responsible aviation authority.

The licenses for commercial pilots and professional pilots as well as the licenses for air sports equipment (ultralight aircraft, hang gliders, paragliders and parachutists) are not the responsibility of the aviation authorities. The following authorities are responsible here:

• the Federal Aviation Office for commercial/professional pilots
• the air sports associations for air sports equipment

• The documents to be submitted are specified in the application form.

Personal requirements

• physical and mental fitness determined by a flight physician
• reliability of character
• Minimum age (depending on the type of license)

Technical requirements

• Training period in theory and practice with a specified minimum number of flying hours, take-offs and landings
• Acquisition of a radiotelephony certificate
• Proof of English language skills in accordance with ICAO requirements, if applicable

The individual requirements can be obtained from the flight schools or the aviation authorities.
