Primary, secondary and special schools; application for school supervisory approval of building projects

School supervisory approval is required for the construction of new buildings, conversions and extensions to primary, secondary and special schools. The governments are responsible for issuing this.

The school supervisory approval establishes that the building program meets the school's needs and covers the necessary space requirements, taking into account the existing building stock.

School supervisory approval is to be granted if the necessary space requirements for the expected number of pupils and classes in the long term - taking into account the existing building - are covered and the smooth running of the school is guaranteed. In the case of conversions and extensions, approval can already be granted if the realization of the planned construction measures will at least improve inadequate school conditions.

The application to be submitted by the expenditure provider with the involvement of the school must be accompanied by documents (see under "Documents").

The governments are responsible for granting school supervisory approval.

• Documentation on the actual and/or defined catchment area
• documentation on the number of pupils expected in the long term
• Documents on the school's space requirements based on §§ 3 and 4 of the German School Construction Ordinance (SchulbauV) with information on the function and size of the planned rooms and areas, the existing building stock and its future use
