African swine fever; application for designation by food company
If you wish to slaughter, cut up and process a pig from the restricted zones or store the meat and meat products in the event of an outbreak of African swine fever, you must apply for the establishment to be designated.
Description
African swine fever is a category A animal disease and must therefore be controlled. Domestic pigs and wild boar are susceptible. The disease is not dangerous for humans. However, it can cause considerable damage in pig herds. In the vast majority of cases, the infection is fatal for pigs. The virus persists for months, particularly in meat and meat products, and remains infectious.
As soon as African swine fever has broken out, various restricted zones are established.
- In the case of an outbreak in domestic pigs:
- Restricted zone III
This includes the protection zone with a radius of at least 3 km around the outbreak location and the surveillance zone with a radius of at least 10 km around the outbreak location. - Restricted zone I, if applicable
It adjoins restricted zone III on the outside.
- Restricted zone III
- In the case of a wild boar outbreak:
- Restricted zone II
This comprises the infected zone. This is defined with a radius of approx. 15 km around the location where the infected wild boar was found. - Restricted zone I
This is defined with a radius of approx. 45 km around the outbreak location.
- Restricted zone II
A designation is required for
a) the direct slaughter of kept pigs from restricted zones II and III
b) the cutting, processing and storage of fresh meat and meat products, including casings, obtained from pigs kept in restricted zones II and III
(c) the dressing of game meat and the processing and storage of fresh meat and meat products of wild boar obtained in restricted zones I, II and III
(d) the dressing of wild game and the processing and storage of fresh meat and meat products of wild boar obtained in restricted zones I, II and III
Exceptions are possible for letters b) to d).
Exemptions are granted by the competent district administrative authorities for establishments not approved under food law. In the case of establishments approved under food law, the competent government or the Bavarian Food Safety and Veterinary Control Authority issues the exemption.
