If you want to hunt, you have to successfully pass a hunter's exam and get a hunting license.
The hunter's examination is taken by the competent authority. The comprehensive exam consists of the shooting, the written and the oral-practical exam.
Preparatory courses for the hunter's examination are offered by the district groups of the state hunters' association and by private hunting schools. Participation in a course in preparation for the exam is highly recommended.
In order to meet the needs of the interested group of people, both short-term intensive courses and courses lasting several months are offered to choose from.

The possession of a valid hunting license entitles the holder to hunt in the federal territory (with the consent of the respective hunting ground owner) and to purchase hunting weapons. Hunting licenses can be applied for and extended at the district of Verden as the lower hunting authority. The hunting license can be applied for either for one or three years.
Application documents:

- Proof of hunting liability insurance (500,000 euros for personal injury and 50,000 euros for property damage)
- When first issued: proof of having passed the hunting examination
- for first issue: a current photograph
- When first issued: identity card or passport with registration certificate

- 90.00 euros (incl. hunting tax) for the initial issue or renewal of an annual hunting license
- 220.00 Euro (incl. hunting tax) for the initial issue or renewal of a three-year hunting license
- 30.00 Euro (incl. hunting tax) for the issue of a one-day hunting license
- 35.00 euros (incl. hunting tax) for the initial issue or renewal of a youth hunting license
