The responsible government grants recognition for eye test centers. Holders of this recognition are authorized to carry out eye tests for the acquisition of a driver's license.

Anyone wishing to carry out eye tests to obtain a driver's license who is not already considered an officially recognized eye test centre under the provisions of the Driving Licence Ordinance requires recognition by the respective government in accordance with Section 67 (1) of the Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV). Pursuant to Section 67 (4) and (5) FeV, officially recognized eye test centres are opticians, assessment centres for driving fitness, doctors from the health authorities or other doctors from public administration as well as doctors with the specialty title "occupational medicine" or doctors with the additional title "occupational medicine". Officially recognized eye test centres may carry out eye tests and issue eye test certificates which must be presented to a driver's license authority for the issue of a driver's license for categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, L or T.

An informal application must be submitted with proof of the above-mentioned requirements.

• the persons entrusted with the eye tests have the required expertise,
• the equipment used complies with the legal requirements
• the premises allow the test to be carried out without the presence of third parties,
• regular medical supervision of the procedure is ensured.

The administrative court action is available as a legal remedy.

An application with all supporting documents must be submitted to the responsible government.

The online procedure offered by the governments for this purpose can be used not only to apply online for official recognition of an eye test center, but also for an extension and changes/additions to existing recognition. It can also be used to report the cessation of activities online.

The following bodies are already recognized as eye test centers and do not need to submit an application:

Assessment centers for driving fitness (§ 66 FeV), doctors of the health department or other doctors of the public administration, doctors with the area designation "occupational medicine", doctors with the additional designation "occupational medicine" and businesses of opticians (§ 67 para. 4 FeV)
