Residence deregistration

If you move out of an apartment and do not move into another apartment in Germany, you must deregister.

The most important cases are moving abroad or deregistering a secondary residence.

If you move within Germany, you do not have to deregister. It is sufficient to register with your new municipality.

To the registration office of the municipality or town of your previous place of residence.

• Identity card or passport if the person required to register has reached the age of 16
• Identity documents of the family members who are deregistered together on one deregistration form
  • for children: Children's passport or birth certificate

The competent authority may request the submission of further documents to verify the information (e.g. marriage certificate).
If you send the completed registration form for deregistration by post to the responsible office, enclose a copy of the identity documents for yourself and all family members to be deregistered.

In the case of persons under the age of 16, care must be taken to ensure that they are deregistered by the person from whose home they are moving out.

You must deregister within 2 weeks of moving out of the apartment. You can deregister in the week before you move out of the apartment.

If you do not comply with your obligation to deregister or do not do so on time, you are committing an administrative offense that can be punished with a fine.

You can deregister either in person (by visiting the Citizens' Office) or in writing. You will receive a confirmation of deregistration once you have deregistered.
