Applying for a change of school type to a grammar school

If your child attends a Realschule plus and would like to transfer to a grammar school, this is possible under certain conditions.

The transfer of your child from a Realschule plus to a Gymnasium is possible after attending grades 7, 8 or 9, if the class conference of the Realschule plus recommends this.

Enrolment at a grammar school after prior attendance at a secondary school is only possible if the required recommendation from the Realschule plus is submitted. Please inquire at the Gymnasium what other documents are required for the admission decision in each individual case.

The voluntary change from a Realschule plus to a Gymnasium requires that the class conference of the Realschule plus recommends this change.  

An objection is not possible.

If, from the point of view of the Realschule plus, a change to a Gymnasium is appropriate or sensible, the school management will discuss this with you. After that, the class conference must discuss whether it can make a corresponding recommendation. On the basis of this recommendation, you as a parent can decide and, if necessary, enroll your child in a grammar school.

If you would like to change from a Realschule plus to a Gymnasium without the initiative coming from the school, you can present this wish to the school management or to your child's class leader. The school can then also bring about a decision by the class conference for a recommendation to change schools. With this recommendation, your child is entitled to be admitted to a grammar school accessible from your place of residence; this does not have to be the high school you want, as the intake capacities of the high schools must be taken into account.

Application Deadline

There is no formal deadline. However, since the change is only possible at the beginning of the school year, the recommendation of the Realschule plus should be made in good time so that you can register at the Gymnasium in the last week of school before the summer holidays at the latest.  

The decision of the class conference will usually be possible within 2 to 3 weeks.

If there is a change to the Gymnasium and your child has to catch up on learning content in the second foreign language, the performance in this subject will be graded for the first time in the annual report of the Gymnasium.
