For the European elections, you will be entered on the electoral roll as a German citizen either ex officio or on application.
Description
If you are a German citizen living in Germany and would like to vote in the European elections, you must first be entered in the electoral register. This
is either done automatically ex officio or you must submit an application.

Required documents
The application for entry in the electoral roll must include
- surnames,
- the first names
- the date of birth
- the exact address;
The application must be submitted in writing.
Prerequisites
You will be entered in the voters' register ex officio if you are on the 42nd day before the election,
- are German or German within the meaning of Article 116 paragraph 1 of the Basic Law,
- are at least 18 years old on election day,
- are not excluded from the right to vote,
- have your main residence or your sole residence in Germany or
- are a captain or
- are a crew member of a seagoing vessel flying the German flag or
- as a skipper of an inland waterway vessel registered in the German shipping register or
- are registered as a member of the relevant household or
- are registered at the address of a prison or similar institution in Germany.
You will be included in the electoral roll upon application,
if you
- are German or German within the meaning of Article 116 Paragraph 1 of the Basic Law,
- are at least 18 years old on election day,
- are not excluded from the right to vote,
- have your habitual residence in Germany without a home or are in a prison without having been registered ex officio.
Basis for legal action
Procedure
If you are a German national and have not been entered in the electoral roll ex officio, you can submit an application to do so. In this case, proceed as follows:
- You submit an informal application to the municipality responsible for you.
- The authority decides on the application and sends out an election notification or a rejection notice.
