Vehicle registration: Re-registration in another registration district with application for a new license plate

Have you moved to another licensing district? Then you have to have your vehicle documents updated at the responsible registration authority there and apply for a new license plate if you do not want to continue using the previous license plate.

If a keeper has moved to another registration district, he must inform the registration authority responsible for the new place of residence or registered office of his new address and have the vehicle documents (registration certificates or vehicle registration document and vehicle registration document) corrected. In addition, he must apply for the assignment of a new license plate if he does not want to continue using the previous license plate.

The re-registration of a vehicle and the new registration number must be applied for at the registration authority responsible for the place of residence (main residence within the meaning of the Federal Registration Act).

In the case of legal persons, traders and self-employed persons with a fixed place of business, the authority of the registered office or place of the establishment involved shall be competent.

• valid identity card or passport with the original of the last registration certificate of the place of residence; foreign nationals need a valid identity document with a current registration certificate
• a power of attorney if an authorised representative submits the application (the authorised representative's identity card and a copy of the vehicle owner's identity card are required)
• Registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document)
• Registration certificate Part II (vehicle registration document)
• previous license plate(s) (if a new license plate is to be reassigned)
• Test report of the last main inspection (HU)
• Insurance confirmation (eVB number)

for companies:

• additional business registration or excerpt from the commercial register

for clubs:

• in addition, extract from the register of associations and identification of the responsible person(s) entitled to signature (board)

for underage vehicle owners:

• additional declaration of consent of both parents or guardians (if applicable custody judgment) and their identity card/passport with registration certificate

You must have already registered at your new place of residence / company headquarters.

Your vehicle must be re-registered immediately.

The fees for re-registration are based on the scale of charges for road traffic measures. The amount of the fees may vary depending on the case constellation. Specific information on this can be obtained from the locally competent licensing authority.
