With the introduction of the Realschule plus, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate is adapting the school structure to the changing social requirements and the demands of demographic developments. From the 2013/2014 school year, the previous types of secondary modern school (Hauptschule and Realschule) will only exist under independent sponsorship.

Main objectives:

• More and higher graduation opportunities for pupils, so that
• more education, more practical relevance and better career prospects for young people
• More equal opportunities and more educational equality

The Realschule plus is available in a cooperative and an integrative form. Both lead to the qualified secondary school leaving certificate I (intermediate school leaving certificate) and the vocational qualification.

Cooperative form: Teaching after the joint orientation stage in classes related to the qualification.

Integrative form: Class group remains together, differentiation in individual subjects according to ability.

The organization of the Realschule plus ensures permeability. The change to a higher educational qualification is facilitated and supported by support measures. All Realschulen plus offer compulsory elective subjects:

• Business and administration
• Technology and science
• Home economics and social work
• 2nd foreign language

The Realschule plus can be combined organizationally with a technical secondary school with the subject areas of metal technology, computer engineering, economics and administration, health and social affairs (focus on health) or the subject combination of economics and administration/health and social affairs (focus on health). The two-year Fachoberschule leads to the general entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, including a work placement to be completed in year 11.

Many Realschulen plus are all-day schools; some Realschulen plus are testing the "No one without qualifications" project.
