Register secondary residence

If you move into an apartment that you do not primarily use, you must register it as a secondary residence with the relevant registration authority within two weeks.

If you have and live in several apartments in Germany, one apartment is your main apartment, all other apartments are secondary apartments. It is regulated by law that the main residence is the predominantly used residence. In cases of doubt, the predominantly used dwelling is where the main focus of living relations is located.

Contact the registration office (residents' registration office) of the town, municipality or administrative community in which the secondary residence is located.

• Completed and signed registration form (registration form) at the registration office (Registration form is available from the registration office)
• Identity card or passport (for change of residence or address)
• Confirmation from the landlord

In the case of persons under 16 years of age, care must be taken to ensure that they are registered by the persons into whose dwelling they move.

You must register within two weeks of moving in.

There are no fees to pay.

Some cities levy a second home tax.
