Obligation to register in accommodation facilities

If your stay in an accommodation facility exceeds six months, you must register with the relevant registration authority.

If you are accommodated in a place of accommodation, you must register with the registration office as soon as your stay exceeds six months.

If you do not have a home within Germany, you must register after just three months.

As a guest of an accommodation facility (hotel, guesthouse, inn and similar), you must sign a special registration form by hand on the day of arrival.

The number of accompanying family members must be stated on the registration form. For tour groups of more than 10 people, the tour guide must must sign the special registration form; he/she must indicate the number of fellow travelers and their nationality.

The special registration forms must be presented by the accommodation provider to certain authorities for inspection upon request in order to fulfill their duties.

The accommodation facility and, if applicable, the registration authority in whose jurisdiction the accommodation facility is located.

If you are a foreigner, you must provide a valid identity document.

The special registration form is provided by the manager of the accommodation facility or his/her authorized representative.

In the case of persons under 16 years of age, care must be taken to ensure that they are registered by the persons into whose dwelling they move.

They must register within two weeks as soon as their stay exceeds six or three months.

There are no fees.
