Passport replacement in the event of passport loss abroad

If you have lost your passport abroad or it has been stolen and you wish to travel home, you must have replacement travel documents issued. You can apply for these at the German diplomatic mission in the country you are traveling to.

If you have lost your passport abroad or it has been stolen, you must have replacement travel documents issued for your journey home.

Depending on whether you want to return directly to Germany or enter other countries, either a travel document that is only valid for entry into Germany or a new passport must be issued.

Please note: Some countries require the entry stamp in the passport as proof of legal entry when leaving the country. In these cases, you may have to apply for an exit visa.

The German diplomatic representation (embassy, consulate general or consulate) in the country of destination

If there is no German diplomatic mission abroad, please contact the representative authority of another member state of the European Union (EU) in the country you are traveling to.

• Certificate of loss or theft reported to the police
• Two current biometric passport photos in passport format 45 x 35 mm
• Proof of identity and nationality (e.g. identity card, copy of lost or stolen passport)

Tip: So that new travel documents can be issued to you more quickly, you should carry copies of all your identity documents with you on your trip.

Replacement travel documents can be issued on request by the German diplomatic mission in the country of travel. Go to the German embassy, consulate general or consulate with the required documents (honorary consuls are not authorized to issue documents).

Validity

• Travel document: duration of the trip, maximum one month
• Temporary passport: up to one year

Issue

• Travel document: usually within a few hours
• Temporary passport: several days

Notes: In order to be able to issue you with a temporary passport, the passport authority of your place of residence must issue the authorization. This can take different lengths of time depending on the individual case and the availability of the authority. If you also require an exit visa, your onward journey may also be delayed.

• for a travel document as a passport replacement for direct return to Germany: EUR 8.00
• for a passport with 32 / 48 pages:
  • Persons who have reached the age of 24: EUR - 101 Euro/ 123,00 Euro
  • Persons who have not yet reached the age of 24: EUR - 68.50 Euro / 90.50 Euro
• for a passport using the express procedure: additional EUR 32.00 each
• for a temporary passport: EUR - 70 Euro
