Deregister secondary residence

    If you move out of a secondary residence and do not move into another residence in Germany, you must deregister for this residence.

    Description

    If you move out of one of several apartments (secondary residence) and do not move into another apartment in Germany, you must deregister for this apartment within 2 weeks. This is usually the case if you move abroad permanently or give up your previous apartment without moving into a new apartment in Germany or give up your secondary apartment.

    De-registration ex officio is possible and occurs if you have not fulfilled your obligation to de-register.

    If you do not deregister within two weeks, you are acting irregularly. In this case, you can be fined.

    Required documents

    Identification documents of the persons to be deregistered.

    If you are unable to appear in person, the registration form signed by you can also be presented by an authorized person (power of attorney required). In the case of families, it is sufficient if one of the adult family members appears in person and the family has moved out together. Please remember to bring all IDs and passports of the family members.

    Prerequisites

    Actual moving out of the dwelling and not moving into a new dwelling in the country.

    In the case of temporary absence with the possibility and intention to continue using the apartment, there is no obligation to deregister.

    In the case of persons under 16 years of age, it is important to note that they must be deregistered by the persons from whose dwelling they are moving out.

    In contrast to moving in, moving out does not need to be confirmed separately by the housing provider.

    Procedure

    The deregistration procedure is as follows:

    In person:

    • You go to the relevant authority and fill out a registration form.
    • You present the identity documents of the person to be deregistered.
    • You will then receive the official confirmation of registration from the registration office.

    In writing:

    • You inform the registration office of the extract with the completed registration form.
    • You enclose copies of the ID cards of the persons to be deregistered.
    • You will receive the official confirmation of registration by post from the registration office.

    Electronically:

    • If electronic access has been set up by the registration authority, you can also deregister electronically.

    Deadlines

    You have to deregister within 2 weeks after moving out of the secondary residence, if you do not move into a new residence in Germany You can already deregister in the week before moving out of the residence. In this case, the registration register will only be updated on the date of the actual move-out.
