Make identity card notifications
If anything changes with regard to your ID card or the data entered on it, you must report this immediately.
Description
The data on your ID card must always be up to date, otherwise it will become invalid. In addition, as a German citizen, you are obliged to have an ID card from the age of 16.
You are therefore obliged to notify the Citizens' Registration Office of the following:
- Name changes
- Loss of your identity card
- Theft of your identity card
- If you have found your ID card again after reporting it lost.
Note: You can also report the loss and theft of your ID card to the police.
There are 2 exceptions:
- If your address or height changes, your ID card remains valid.
- If you do not comply with the obligation to register a new address within Germany, you are committing an offense.
