Admission of a foreign lawyer to the Bar Association

A national of a member state of the World Trade Organization who exercises a profession which corresponds in training and powers to the profession of lawyer under the Federal Lawyers' Act is entitled to establish himself in Germany under the professional title of the state of origin to provide legal services in the fields of the law of the state of origin and international law if he has been admitted to the bar association responsible for the place of his establishment upon application.

• Proof of citizenship
• Certificate from the competent authority in the country of origin confirming membership of the profession of lawyer together with a certified translation
• Proof of professional liability insurance (original) for an insurance policy taken out in Germany
• If applicable, certified copy of the doctoral degree certificate or other evidence of the acquisition of academic degrees
• Residence and work permit
• Transfer of the administrative fee

• You submit your completed and signed application with all the necessary documents to the relevant bar association.
• The requirements for admission will be checked at the Bar Association office.
• If all requirements are met, you will be admitted to the Bar Association.
• Upon admission, you will also become a member of the Bar Association.
