Description
Veterinarians can only work in Hesse after obtaining the German license to practice medicine or obtaining a permit for the temporary or limited exercise of the veterinary profession.
By taking up your activity in Hesse, you are a member of the State Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons of Hesse by law.
You are obliged to register with the Chamber within 4 weeks.
The main tasks of the Chamber include:
- to represent the professional interests of the members,
- to promote the education and training of its members, and
- to supervise the fulfilment of professional obligations.
As a member you have to pay an annual fee. This is levied by the Chamber in order to cover its expenses. For the first calendar year after you have received the license to practice medicine or the professional license, you are exempt from the contributions.
Hint: If you relocate your veterinary activity or residence (without being a veterinarian) abroad, you can remain a voluntary member.

Der Landestierärztekammer Hessen gehören alle Tierärzte an, die in Hessen ihren Beruf ausüben. Die LTK Hessen nimmt in Selbstverwaltung die beruflichen Belange ihrer Kammerangehörigen gegenüber Staat und Gesellschaft wahr, und zwar auf allen Gebieten tierärztlicher Berufsausübung (Kliniken, freie Praxis, Beamte und Angestellte oder in anderen Tätigkeitsbereichen). Die Aufgaben der Landestierärztekammer (z. B. Berufsaufsicht, Weiter- und Fortbildung, Fachtierarztprüfungen, Qualitätssicherung) sind im Hessischen Heilberufsgesetz geregelt. Darüber hinaus ist die Landestierärztekammer Hessen zuständige Stelle für die Ausbildung von Tiermedizinischen Fachangestellten. Sie regelt und überwacht die Berufsausbildung, führt das Verzeichnis der Berufsausbildungsverhältnisse und bietet Ausbildungsberatungen an.

Prerequisites
You must
- Veterinarian
- and be in possession of a German license to practice medicine
- or have a temporary or limited permit to practice the veterinary profession (issued in Hesse by the Regierungspräsidium Gießen) and
- practise as a veterinarian in Hesse, or
- if you do not practice your profession, you are resident in Hesse.

Please contact the office of the State Chamber of Veterinarians in advance by telephone, e-mail or fax or download the form from the Chamber's website. They will send you the registration documents by post.

Registration within one month of commencing professional activity (in 5 days in the case of temporary professional activity)
