Hessenkolleg

Hessenkollegs offer - like evening grammar schools - based on different educational biographies independent ways to acquire the general higher education entrance qualification (the Abitur) retrospectively and thus qualify for a course of study or for professional requirements. Instruction is given from the introductory phase on the basis of the core curricula for the upper secondary school, but takes into account the professional experience of the students and their age.

In Hesse, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs is responsible for the school system.

• a curriculum vitae with photo
• a certified copy of your last general school leaving certificate and - if available - your vocational school certificate
• certified copies of your vocational certificate (e.g. journeyman's, skilled worker's or assistant's certificate) or other proof of your professional activity
• a brief written statement as to whether you have already tried to be accepted into a college or evening school
• any other documents required by the respective school

You can be admitted to an Abendgymnasium or Hessenkolleg if you meet the following requirements:

• You have a school-leaving certificate that is at least equivalent to the Hauptschulabschluss.
• You are at least 18 years old.
• You have completed vocational training or have worked professionally for at least 2 years.
• You have sufficient knowledge of German to be able to follow the lessons.
• You pass an aptitude test in German, English and mathematics.
• You show in a counseling interview that your motivation and learning attitude indicate that you can expect to work successfully.

Proven unemployment can be counted towards the required work experience for up to one year. Military service, civil or development service and a voluntary social or ecological year are also taken into account. In special life situations, the school may waive proof of employment in individual cases.

You can only be accepted if you have not yet acquired the general higher education entrance qualification and have not failed the Abitur examination more than once.

You apply directly to the college you would like to attend and submit all documents proving that you meet the requirements.

The school management will check your previous knowledge and hold a consultation with you. On this basis, the school will decide whether to admit you to the preliminary course or the introductory phase. If you have a lower secondary school leaving certificate, you must attend the preliminary course. You can enter the introductory phase directly if you have an intermediate school leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss) or an equivalent qualification.
