Secondary school

The Hauptschule prepares pupils for the world of work and employment. It also enables young people to continue their education, primarily in vocational courses, but also in courses that qualify them to study. The course leads to the Hauptschule certificate in the simple and qualifying form.

Lessons in the Hauptschule build on the content and learning techniques acquired in elementary school. The methods are age-appropriate and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning. In terms of content, the teaching of key qualifications has a high priority. Practical and activity-oriented lessons are the focus of the educational work; they are supplemented by project days and interdisciplinary projects.

Pupils at the Hauptschule take part in a final examination in year 9. This consists of two parts: the central final papers in the subjects German, mathematics and, if applicable, the first foreign language, as well as a project examination.

After completing their secondary general school certificate, students have a wide range of options for further school education in addition to entering dual vocational training.

In Hesse, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs is responsible for the school system.
