The death of a person must be reported to the registry office.
Notification obligation
In the case of deaths in hospitals, retirement and nursing homes and similar institutions, the obligation to report the death lies with the institution's owner. Otherwise, the following persons are obliged to report a death in the following order
- Any person who lived with the deceased in the same household,
- the person in whose home the death occurred,
- any other person who was present at the death or who is aware of the death from their own knowledge. (This also includes the morticians, who usually take over the notification after the clinics).

Information for Frankfurt am Main: Sterbefall - anzeigen
11,00 Euro für die erste Ausfertigung einer Sterbeurkunde 5,50 Euro für die zweite und jede weitere Ausfertigung. 12,50 Euro Suchgebühr pro angefangene Viertelstunde. Für das Suchen von Personenstandseinträgen, Auskünfte aus den Registern und Sammelakten wird eine Gebühr in Höhe des tatsächlichen Zeitaufwands berechnet.: Fee from 5,50 EUR to 11,00 EUR (The amount is to be paid in advance)
