Description
If your private household income is not sufficient to cover the costs of your housing, you may be legally entitled to housing benefit. Housing benefit is granted to tenants as a rent subsidy and to owners of residential property (owner-occupied home, condominium) as an encumbrance allowance.
Please note:
Housing benefit is only granted on application. It is paid from the 1st of the month in which the application is made.
The amount of housing benefit is determined by the size of the family, the family income and the amount of rent or charges to be taken into account. The rent eligible for housing benefit includes the cold operating costs (so-called gross cold rent), but not heating and hot water costs.
The following are excluded from housing benefit payments Recipients of benefits in accordance with the German Social Code (SGB) II and SGB XII, if accommodation costs are already included in their calculation.

Important exception:
As of January 1, 2005, recipients of transfer benefits (e.g. unemployment benefit II, basic security benefits in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity, benefits for subsistence, benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, etc.) are not entitled to housing benefit if the costs of accommodation are taken into account when calculating these benefits.

Description
Wenn das Einkommen Ihres privaten Haushalts nicht ausreicht, um selbst die Kosten für Ihren Wohnraum zu tragen, können Sie einen Rechtsanspruch auf Wohngeld haben. Wohngeld wird für Mieter als Mietzuschuss, für Inhaber von Wohneigentum (Eigenheim, Eigentumswohnung) als Lastenzuschuss gewährt.
Achtung:
Das Wohngeld wird nur auf Antrag gewährt. Gezahlt wird frühestens ab dem 1. des Monats, in dem der Antrag gestellt worden ist.
Maßgebend für die Höhe des Wohngeldes sind die Haushaltsgröße, das Haushaltseinkommen und die Höhe der zu berücksichtigenden Miete bzw. Belastung. Die wohngeldfähige Miete umfasst die kalten Betriebskosten (sog. Brutto‐Kaltmiete), nicht jedoch Umlagen für Heizung und Warmwasser. Bei der Berechnung ab 2023 wird zur Abmilderung der gestiegenen Heiz- und Energiekosten eine Klimakomponente und ein Entlastungsbetrag bei den Heizkosten, bemessen jeweils an der Zahl der Haushaltsmitglieder, mit berücksichtigt und erhöht die zu berücksichtigende Miete/Belastung und damit auch den Wohngeldanspruch.
