Waste charges

Are you a leaseholder, homeowner or landowner? Then you have to pay waste disposal charges.

For the use of public waste disposal facilities, the waste management authorities (the municipalities belonging to the district, the cities not belonging to the district and the rural districts) charge fees to cover the associated costs in accordance with the provisions of the law on municipal charges.

The expenses to be covered by the waste fee include in particular the costs for

• Collection, transportation and disposal of waste from households as well as disposal waste from commercial enterprises, other commercial enterprises or public institutions,
• the marketing of recyclable materials,
• waste consulting,
• planning, construction, operation, aftercare, recultivation and renaturation of waste recycling and disposal facilities and
• the formation of reserves for the foreseeable future costs of decommissioning and aftercare at waste recycling and disposal facilities.

The scale of charges is intended to create effective incentives for prevention and recycling.

Details on the calculation of fees can be found in the waste fee statutes of your municipality, district or city. Information can also be obtained from your local waste disposal company.

As a service for those responsible for waste disposal, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for fee legislation, have developed model statutes in cooperation with the municipal umbrella organizations, which have subsequently been used by a large number of Hessian waste management companies to develop their own fee statutes. However, it is up to the respective municipal bodies to adapt or change these according to their own criteria and taking local circumstances into account.
