Monitor feed quality

You, as a feed business operator, have the primary responsibility for ensuring compliance with feed law - and in particular the safety of feed. To complement and support this principle, the competent authorities must ensure adequate and effective controls.

If your feed is unsafe, you are obliged to withdraw or return it. You are also obliged to notify the competent authorities. This allows the authorities to monitor whether you have taken appropriate measures or that you need to take additional measures to reduce or eliminate a feed safety risk.

The official feed control monitors producers, manufacturers and trading companies of all types of feed. As a company, you must ensure that your feed is safe.

The safety of feedstuffs for animals and the foodstuffs obtained from them is mainly checked by means of company audits and sampling with subsequent laboratory tests. Labelling checks and measures for the traceability of feed at all stages of production are also part of feed monitoring.

The Giessen Regional Council is responsible for feed control throughout Hesse.

The feed inspector carries out a comprehensive root cause analysis. They determine the source of the contamination or the reason why the maximum level was exceeded and thus eliminate it for the future.

The amount of the administrative fee depends on the time spent and is based on the Administrative Cost Regulations for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment, Viticulture, Forestry, Hunting and Homeland (VwKostO-MLU).
