Requesting a license plate for a vehicle

For some years now, it has been possible to obtain a license plate of your choice. Many registration offices now offer the option of selecting a license plate of your choice online from a license plate pool set up by the respective registration authority, regardless of opening hours.

License plates can be reserved for

• CARS / TRUCKS,
• motorcycles and
• seasonal and classic car license plates
  

Contact the registration office in your district or city. Responsibility depends on the place of residence of the vehicle owner (main residence according to the identity card).

In the case of legal entities, it is the registered office of the main branch or the registered office of the branch; this also applies to a general partnership, limited partnership or a registered merchant.

Online reservation:
Select your desired license plate. If the license plate is still available, the license plate will be reserved for a certain period of time after you enter your name and address details, if applicable. You will receive confirmation of the reservation. Print out this confirmation and present it when you register your vehicle.
Otherwise, please observe the requirements of the responsible registration authority.

Please note:
There is no legal entitlement to the allocation of the reserved license plate when reserving online; you should therefore only obtain the license plates in advance if the confirmation from the registration authority shows beyond doubt that the reserved license plate will actually be allocated to you.

The reservation period is determined by the responsible licensing authority.

The fee for pre-reservation is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt); it is currently EUR 12.80 and is payable when you register your vehicle.
