Applying for a driving license

    You can apply for an unlimited driving license for categories A, A1, A2, AM, B, BE, L and T. The driving license, in which the driving licenses are entered, serves as proof of possession of the corresponding driving licenses.

    Anyone who wants to drive a motor vehicle in Germany needs a driving license. The driving license, in which the driving licenses are entered, serves as proof of possession of the corresponding driving licenses.

    You can apply for an unlimited driving license for categories A, A1, A2, AM, B, BE, L and T.

    The first driving license, with the exception of category AM, L and T, is issued on probation. The probationary period lasts two years.

    • Eye test certificate in accordance with Annex 6 No. 1.1 FeV (not older than two years)
    • Proof of participation in a first aid training course

    Prerequisites

    • You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany
    • You must have reached the required minimum age
    • You must be qualified to drive motor vehicles
    • You must have been trained to drive motor vehicles in accordance with the Driving Instructors Act and the legal provisions based on it
    • You must have demonstrated your ability to drive motor vehicles in a theoretical and practical test
    • They must be able to provide first aid and provide the necessary proof of this
    • They must meet and prove the requirements for eyesight
    • You must not hold a driving license in this category issued in a member state of the European Union or another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area

    Procedure

    You must submit an application for the relevant driving license category to the relevant driving license authority.

    Deadlines

    The application for the initial issue of a driving license expires if the theory test has not been passed within twelve months of receipt of the test order or the practical test has not been passed within twelve months of passing the theory test

    The processing time depends on the workload of the responsible driving license authority.

    The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
