Hire chimney sweeps

The legislator has largely abolished the previous monopoly on sweeping. Since 01.01.2013, the chimney sweep no longer comes unsolicited.

You can now freely choose a chimney sweep operation for the following non-sovereign tasks:

• Sweeping and checking your combustion plant
• Measuring exhaust gas values

Hint:
The following sovereign tasks continue to be carried out by the authorised district chimney sweep:

• Acceptance of your combustion plants
• Fireplace show: Within 7 years, the authorized district chimney sweep or the authorized district chimney sweep will contact you 2 times as usual.
• Management of the sweeping book

The competent authority for questions of chimney sweeping are the municipal authorities of your district or your independent city or special status city.

The Feuerstättenbescheid, which was handed over to you as the owner after the fireplace show by your authorised district chimney sweep or your authorised district chimney sweep.

You can commission a chimney sweep company as

• owners of house and apartment property or
• Property management of a condominium association (WEG).

Note:
As a tenant, you may not commission a chimney sweep company.

You must commission a company to carry out the chimney sweep tasks.

You can freely choose your authorised district chimney sweep or another chimney sweep company. The work may be carried out by all companies that are registered with the chimney sweep trade in the register of craftsmen. As a rule, these are all German chimney sweep companies, but also isolated companies of the sanitary, heating and air-conditioning trade. Chimney sweep companies from abroad can usually also be commissioned by you.

For your safety, you should check before commissioning whether the craftsman concerned is actually allowed to carry out the work, for example by checking by means of an Internet query whether the supplier is listed in the chimney sweep register maintained by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control.

The fireplace notice states when you have to have which sweeping, measuring and checking work carried out regularly on the heaters. As the owner of house or apartment property, you will receive this after each fireplace show.

As the owner, you are responsible for meeting the deadlines specified in the Feuerstättenbescheid. You must order the work specified there in good time from an approved company.

Any business that is entered in the register of craftsmen with the chimney sweep trade or meets the requirements of §§ 7 to 9 EU/EEA Crafts Regulation is permitted.

The work shall not be deemed to have been carried out until the form by which the executing undertaking confirms that the work has been carried out has been received by the authorised district chimney sweep within the prescribed period. As the owner, you are responsible for the transmission and timely receipt of the form. However, you may agree with the executing company that it will take over the transmission for you.

• Non-sovereign tasks:
  You can freely negotiate the price for the work specified in the fireplace notice.
• Sovereign tasks:
  The fees are laid down in the Federal Sweeping and Inspection Regulations (KÜO). As the owner, you have to pay them. Detailed information on this can be obtained from the competent authority.
