    In order to take a master craftsman's examination, you must apply for admission to the examination.

    Description

    In order to take the master craftsman's examination in a craft requiring a license, you must submit an application for admission. To be admitted to the master craftsman's examination, you must have already passed the journeyman's examination or have the relevant professional experience.

    The master craftsman examination determines

    • whether you can practice a craft requiring a license
    • can run your own business,
    • and can train apprentices properly.

    The master craftsman examination consists of 4 parts in which the following knowledge is tested:

    • practical
    • theoretical technical,
    • business management
    • and pedagogical knowledge.

    Once you have passed the examination, you will receive a certificate and may use the title of Master Craftsman. Once you have obtained the master craftsman title, you may also use the title Bachelor Professional.

    If you fail any part of the exam, you can retake it up to 3 times.

    - the Chamber of Agriculture for vocational training in agricultural and rural domestic science professions

    - the Chamber of Lawyers, Patent Attorneys and Notaries as well as the Notary's Office for the vocational training of specialists in the field of law,

    - the Chamber of Auditors and the Chamber of Tax Consultants for the vocational training of professionals in the field of auditing and tax consultancy,

    - the Chambers of Physicians, Dentists, Veterinarians and Pharmacists for the vocational training of healthcare professionals.

    Required documents

    • Proof of having passed the journeyman's examination
    • or proof of several years of professional experience in this trade
    • Depending on the competent authority: further documents may be required

    Prerequisites

    You must fulfill one of the following requirements:

    • You must have passed the journeyman's examination in the craft requiring a license in which you wish to take the master craftsman's examination
    • Or you have passed the examination in a related craft requiring a license or a corresponding final examination in a recognized training occupation
    • Or you have a certificate of equivalence for the corresponding craft requiring a license or for a related craft requiring a license
    • Or you have passed another journeyman's examination or another final examination in a recognized training occupation and you have worked for several years in the craft requiring a license in which you wish to take the master craftsman's examination
      • The maximum duration of professional activity is 3 years, depending on the occupation.
      • 1-year technical college is counted as one year of professional activity
      • Several years of vocational school are counted as 2 years of professional activity
    • In the following cases, the period of practical work will be credited: If you work in the craft requiring a license in which you want to take the master craftsman's examination,
      • have been self-employed as a master craftsman or master craftswoman,
      • have worked in a similar position
      • provide evidence of practical experience equivalent to that of a journeyman

    Procedure

    If you would like to take the master craftsman's examination in a craft requiring a license, you should obtain information from the relevant authority in advance and prepare for the examination accordingly. As a rule, the Chamber of Crafts is responsible.

    • In order to be admitted, you must fulfill the relevant requirements
    • You must submit an application to the competent authority for admission
    • The master craftsman examination consists of 4 parts:
      • Part 1: the examination of the masterly execution of the essential work in the respective craft
      • Part 2: the examination of the required theoretical knowledge in the respective trade
      • Part 3: the examination of the necessary business management, commercial and legal knowledge
      • Part 4: the examination of the required vocational and work-related pedagogical knowledge
    • The examination is taken and assessed by the master craftsman examination board. The master craftsman examination board is the state examination authority at the headquarters of the relevant Chamber of Crafts.
    • Once you have passed the master craftsman examination, you are entitled to use the title of master craftsman and will receive a certificate to this effect
    • If you fail a part of the examination, you can repeat this part of the examination up to 3 times.

    Costs

    The master craftsman examination incurs fees and possibly other costs. Depending on the chamber, these may be borne by the relevant chamber. Depending on the competent chamber, costs may also be incurred for admission to the master craftsman examination procedure.
