Re-registering a vehicle with the same owner

Would you like to use your deregistered vehicle on the road again? Then you can re-register it with the registration authority.

If you want to use your deregistered vehicle on public roads again, you must first re-register it.

This is a re-registration to the same owner if you are the person who was previously registered as the owner of the vehicle.

If there has been a change of keeper, this is referred to as re-registration to a different keeper.

You can apply for this in person at the registration authority responsible for you and, in many regions, also online or appoint a representative to do so. If your vehicle has been out of service for more than 7 years, you cannot register the vehicle online.

Under certain conditions, you can also apply for a different license plate.

After around 7 years, the vehicle and owner data will be deleted from the Central Vehicle Register. If you require a certificate of conformity, data confirmation or certificate of individual vehicle approval for your vehicle for re-registration, you must submit a corresponding certificate from a recognized specialist body.

Please contact the vehicle registration authority in your district, independent city or special status city.

• Registration certificate part I, the former vehicle registration document
• Valid electronic insurance confirmation (eVB)
• Valid main inspection and, if applicable, safety inspection
• valid identification document, e.g. identity card or passport of the vehicle owner
  • if the passport is presented, a current registration certificate. The registration certificate must not be older than 3 months.
• Account details or SEPA mandate for collecting the vehicle tax of the vehicle owner
• If available: completed application forms

You may also need to provide additional evidence if:

• Vehicle data has been changed and the data no longer matches the data previously recorded
• or differ from the data on the certificate of conformity when first registered
• you want to use a new license plate, then you need
  • The registration certificate part II, the former vehicle registration document
  • If already available: new, pre-reserved or desired license plate number including PIN
• If you are a representative:
  • Written power of attorney and original identification document of the holder
  • The authorized person themselves must be able to identify themselves with their valid identity card or passport
• In the case of re-registration for minors:
  • the written declaration of consent of the legal guardians and their original identity cards
  • if applicable, a certificate of sole custody for single parents from the youth welfare office, the negative certificate
• For companies additionally:
  • Extract from the trade or commercial register
  • the identification documents of the person responsible and authorized to sign, such as the managing director, authorized signatory or their authorized representative

Depending on the individual case, the licensing authority may request further or other evidence from you.

• In Hesse, you must not have any outstanding fees and expenses from previous registration procedures of more than EUR 10 (including late payment surcharges).

There is no deadline.

Fees for re-registration are charged by the licensing authorities on the basis of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.

In Hesse, the fee for re-registration via an iKfz portal increases by EUR 0.30 for stickers for inspection stickers. The fee does not include the costs for license plates.

In Hesse, the fee for re-registration at the local vehicle registration authority does not include the cost of license plates.
