Apply for the extension of the driver's license for the classes AM, A1, A2 or A

You can have your existing driver's license upgraded to a Class AM, A1, A2 or A driver's license.

With driving license class AM, you can drive two- and three-wheeled mopeds as well as four-wheeled light motor vehicles.

With driving license class A1, you can drive motorcycles with up to 125 cubic centimeters of engine capacity and up to 11 kW of power.

With the driving license class A2 you can drive motorcycles up to 35 kW power, whose output power is not more than 70 kW.

With the driving license class A you can drive motorcycles as well as three-wheeled motor vehicles.

The driving license classes AM, A1, A2 and A are issued for an unlimited period of time.

Simplified requirements apply for the upgrade from A1 to A2 and A2 to A.

To obtain the driving license upgrade, you must pass a theoretical and a practical test.

Contact the driving license authority responsible for you.

• valid identity card or passport (if necessary with current certificate of residence)
• Application for extension of driving license
• in biometric photo according to the passport regulation (size 45x35 mm)
• eye test certificate (not older than two years)
• Proof of training in first aid (if not already proven to the driving license authority)
• valid driver's license
• if necessary, a copy of the card from the last issuing authority (if different)

• You must have a driver's license.
• You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.
• The minimum age for class AM is 15 years.
• The minimum age for class A1 is 16 years.
• The minimum age for class A2 is 18 years.
• The minimum age for class A is 24 years for motorcycles with direct access, 21 years for three-wheeled motor vehicles with a power of more than 15 kW.

You must submit an application to the relevant driving license authority and enclose the required documents. After the driving license authority has processed your application, it will issue a test order to the technical test centre to take the driving test(s).

The practical test must be taken within 12 months of passing the theoretical test. Otherwise, the theoretical exam loses its validity.

The processing time depends on the individual case.

The fee is based on the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).

If the driver's license is sent directly to the home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.
