Apply for trailer category E

If you have a driving licence class BE, you may couple trailers with a total weight of up to 3,500 kg to your car.

With the driving licence category BE, you can couple a trailer with a permissible gross vehicle weight of more than 750 kg and a total weight of the combination of more than 3.5 t to your vehicle. The maximum weight of the trailer must not exceed 3,500 kg.

You must already hold a class B driving licence.

When upgrading to category BE, only one practical test is required. A theory test is not required.

Responsibility lies with the driving licence authority.

• valid identity card or passport (if necessary with current registration certificate)
• a biometric photograph in accordance with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (size 45 x35)
• Vision test certificate according to Annex 6 No. 1.1 FeV (not older than two years)
• Proof of training in first aid (if not already proven to the driving licence authority)

You must submit an application to your competent driving licence authority for an extension of your driving licence to category BE.

There is no deadline.

Depending on the workload of the competent driving licence authority.

The fee is based on the applicable scale of charges for road transport measures (GebOSt).
