electronic proof of identity storage

Here you will find information on how to store your personal data in the chip of your identity card.

    Description

Your identity card is equipped with an electronic storage and processing medium, a so-called "chip". This allows you to use your ID card online. With the online ID card you identify yourself securely on the Internet. You simply handle your administrative procedures or business matters electronically. This saves time, costs and distances.

Electronic proof of identity is provided by transmitting data

    1. from the electronic storage and processing medium of the identity card, or

    2. from an electronic storage and processing medium in a mobile terminal.

The following data is stored on the chip of the identity card:

    1. surname and maiden name,
    2. Forenames
    3. Doctorate
    4. Date and place of birth
    5. Photograph
    6. Address, in the case of address abroad, the indication "no residence in Germany"
    7. Nationality
    8. Order name, stage name
    9. Fingerprints, designation of the fingers recorded, information on the quality of the prints

The Identity Card Act also regulates which data may be stored on an electronic storage and processing medium in a mobile device for the purpose of setting up an electronic proof of identity in accordance with § 10a paragraph 1 sentence 1:

After your consent by entering a PIN, the following data can be transmitted using the online ID function:

    • Surname and given name(s)
    • Date and place of birth
    • Address and postal code
    • if indicated: birth name
    • if indicated: religious or artist name
    • if indicated: doctoral degree

Each time you use the online ID, it will be checked whether your identity card is still valid and has not been blocked. This protects it from misuse in case you lose it.

For sovereign purposes, your photo is stored in the chip of your identity card. Until July 2021, the additional storage of two fingerprints in the chip was voluntary; since 2 August 2021, it has been mandatory throughout Europe for newly issued identity cards. Only authorities that are legally authorised to verify identity may read the biometric data in the chip. Photographs and fingerprints are never requested without your knowledge.
