Apply for an operating licence for a branch pharmacy

On request, an operating licence for a branch pharmacy may be issued.

If there is an emergency in the supply of medicines due to a lack of pharmacies to supply the population, you as the owner of a nearby pharmacy can apply for permission to operate a branch pharmacy. Branch pharmacies have less equipment than normal pharmacies, but this is also regulated by law.

Branch pharmacies must be managed, the administrator needs a permit from the competent authority.

As a rule, you will not be granted permission for more than one branch pharmacy.

Permission will be granted to you for 5 years, it can be granted again.

• Notification of whether and, if so, where you operate one or more pharmacies in a member state of the European Union or in another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or in a state party to which Germany and the European Union have contractually granted a corresponding legal claim
• Proof that you have the prescribed operating premises

The competent authority may also request further documents.

• The competent authority determines that the legal requirements are met.
• If the requirements are met, the operating permit is issued.
• An inspection of the premises must be carried out by the competent authority before the start of operations.
