Description
If a child is born during a voyage on a seagoing vessel that is entitled to fly the federal flag, there is an obligation to report the birth to the registry office I in Berlin. The parent with custody shall submit the birth announcement to the skipper. If the parents are unable to attend, any other person who was present at the birth is also obliged to report. The birth is certified by the registry office I in Berlin.

Required documents

- Marriage certificate or a certified printout from the marriage register, possibly with translation, legalisation or apostille

- Declaration of acknowledgement of paternity and declaration of consent by the mother

A marriage certificate and proof of dissolution of the marriage must also be presented if the marriage has been divorced in the meantime or the husband has died within 300 days before the birth of the child.

Prerequisites
If a child is born on a German seagoing vessel, the notification is mandatory. This applies regardless of the nationality of the parents or the child.

Legal remedy
Application for a judicial decision to the district court responsible for the registry office, § 49 Abs. 1 PStG.
Procedure
- The parent with custody or, in the event of his or her being prevented from attending, another person who was present at the birth shall submit the birth notification to the skipper.
- The required documents should be attached or submitted to the registry office I in Berlin at the next opportunity. Ordered documents can be sent.
Deadlines
The notification must be made immediately to the skipper by the persons obliged to do so. Immediate means without culpable delay.

0 to 5 days (The notarization takes place within a few days after receipt of the notification at the registry office I in Berlin, provided that all necessary documents are available.)
