Death certificate issued in case of death abroad

It is possible that you have a German death certificate issued for a death occurred abroad at the responsible German registry office.

You can apply for the issuance of a German death certificate for a death occurred abroad at the competent German registry office.

• As an applicant, you must prove your identity (identity card, passport or copy of identity document)
• where appropriate, the production of further documents is required.

• the prior certification of the death that occurred abroad in a German death register.
• an application for a death certificate may be submitted:
  • Spouse and partner of the deceased person
  • Ancestors and descendants of the deceased person (e.g. child, grandchild)
  • siblings of the deceased person, if you demonstrate a legitimate interest, or
  • other persons, if they demonstrate a legal interest
• Applicants must be over 16 years of age.

• You submit the application for the issuance of the death certificate to the competent registry office and attach the necessary documents.
• The registry office will check your details and the documents you have submitted and, if necessary, issue the death certificate.
• The registry office will send you the death certificate by post, unless a personal collection has been arranged.
• The fees are paid either in advance or after delivery/pick-up by you.

The 30-year deadline for the continuation of the death register by the registry office must not yet have expired.

for the certification of a death, unless the municipality has set a different fee by statute: Fee 47,00 EUR

for the issuance of a death certificate: Fee 12,00 EUR

with simultaneous order of each additional copy, unless the municipality has fixed a different fee by statute.: Fee 6,00 EUR
