Identity card issued new due to name change at marriage

Have you got married and therefore changed your name? Then you must apply for a new identity card if you do not have a valid passport document with the new name.
If your children's surname has changed, their documents with the old name are also invalid.

If your name has changed after a marriage, the identity card is invalid (due to incorrect name). In order to fulfil the ID requirement, a new identity card must be applied for.

Exception: There is a valid passport with the new name.

• Marriage certificate
• valid passport or birth certificate,
• a biometrically suitable photograph (according to the photo sample board).

The obligation to apply for an identity card applies to you if you:

• have German citizenship,
• have reached the age of 16,
• are registered in Germany,
• do not have a valid passport or temporary passport with the new name.

For applications outside your main residence:

• You must be able to explain an important reason why you do not apply for the identity card at the identity card authority responsible for your main residence.
• Exception: The temporary identity card cannot be applied for abroad.

€22.80 for applicants under 24 years of age; 37,00€ for applicants in all other cases.

13,00€ surcharge for applications outside working hours or at a non-competent authority.
