    If you wish to marry abroad, the foreign state may require the presentation of a certificate of no impediment to marriage.

    The registry office at the place of the last habitual residence in Germany is responsible for issuing a certificate of no impediment to marriage for German citizens without domicile or current habitual residence in Germany. If the spouse has never or only temporarily resided in Germany, the registry office 1 in Berlin is responsible.

    Procedure

    The issuance of a certificate of no impediment to marriage is applied for at the competent registry office 1 in Berlin. If the examination shows that there is no impediment to marriage under German law to the intended marriage and if the necessary information has been provided about the two fiancées, the registry office issues the requested certificate of no impediment to marriage.

    Deadlines

    After issue, the certificate of no impediment to marriage is valid for a period of six months.

    If the registry office I is responsible, fees are charged in accordance with Berlin state law. If a Hessian registry office is responsible for the issuance, fees of 47.00 euros will be charged and, if foreign law must also be taken into account, an additional 23.50 euros per right, unless the municipality has set any deviating fees by statute.
