If you travel a lot, you can apply for a passport with 48 pages. This passport offers you more space for entry and exit stamps and visas.

You can apply for a passport at the citizens' office at your place of residence. If you have more than one place of residence, apply for the passport at your main place of residence.

If you need the passport at short notice, you can also apply for it using the express procedure. Please note that additional costs will then be charged for your application.

To the passport and identity card authority of your municipality of residence.

• Previous identity document, for example:
  • Passport
  • identity card
  • Children's passport

• Biometric digital passport photo: taken on site at the authority or by a registered domestic photo service provider, e.g. a photographer
• Birth certificate, if applicable
• You may need to submit further documents, for example civil status certificates or citizenship certificates

• You have German citizenship
• There must be no grounds for refusal

You must apply for your 48-page passport in person.

• Make an appointment at your local citizens' office.
• Bring all the necessary documents with you to the appointment.
• The official staff will fill out the application with you on site. All you have to do is sign it.
• You are required by law to provide fingerprints for storage in the document.
  • A flat print is usually taken of the left and right index finger.
  • Children under the age of 6 do not have to give a fingerprint.
• You will receive information from your Citizens' Registration Office as to when you can collect your passport.
• You can arrange a collection date online, by e-mail or by telephone at many citizens' offices. Alternatively, in many cases you can have the ID document sent to your home address by post and handed over in person at the front door.

You can authorize another person of legal age in writing to collect the document from the authority.

The fees are doubled if you apply for a passport outside of official office hours or at a passport authority that is not locally responsible.

A fee reduction or exemption is possible under certain conditions.
