School – freedom of learning materials

In Hesse, the so-called freedom of learning materials applies: pupils or their parents do not have to purchase learning materials such as textbooks, materials for science lessons or learning software at their own expense. Instead, they can be borrowed for a certain period of time.

Certain objects are exempt from the freedom of learning materials and must be brought by the students themselves. These include, for example, writing and drawing materials, calculators and musical instruments. On the other hand, the school authorities are responsible for the purchase of teaching materials such as sports equipment or wall maps.

Pupils at public schools and eligible alternative schools are provided with the learning materials introduced at the school free of charge and for a limited period of time (loan) or they are made available on the premises of the school for common use.
