Applying for recognition of a specialist veterinarian or additional designation

In addition to their professional title, veterinarians may use other titles that refer to special knowledge and skills in a specific field (specialist veterinary title) or area (additional title).

Areas include anatomy, epidemiology, meat hygiene or small animal surgery. Areas include dermatology, homeopathy, reptiles or dentistry.

The acquisition and use of the continuing education titles is regulated in the continuing education regulations of the Hessian State Chamber of Veterinarians.

You must submit the following documents with your application:

• Proof of completed further training
• Proof of nationality
• Proof of the continuing education content in the form of continuing education regulations, examination regulations or in another suitable manner, from which the study contents and the duration of the completed further education for obtaining the continuing education certificate can be found

• The applicant must be a member of the State Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons
• The prescribed training must have been successfully completed

The designations awarded by another veterinary association may be continued.

If veterinarians from another Member State of the European Community have obtained a training title, they receive recognition in the respective area after verification of equivalence. However, if the continuing education regulations of the Hessian State Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons do not provide for a corresponding designation, this can be continued if the essential requirements of the Hessian continuing education regulations are met.

You must apply for recognition in writing. The necessary form can be obtained from the Hessian State Chamber of Veterinarians.

• for the processing of an application for a specialist veterinary certification: 100,00 Euro
• for the examination interview according to § 8 of the continuing education regulations: 350,00 Euro

This applies mutatis mutandis to the application for recognition of an additional designation. The fee must be paid before the examination interview is scheduled.
