Renewal of a temporary driving licence

You can renew your driving licences for categories C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E for five years upon application.

The driving licence of categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E shall be issued for a maximum of five years and may be renewed for five years at the request of the holder of the licence.

The responsibility lies with the driving licence authority.

• Official proof of place and day of birth (e.g. identity card, passport)
• Previous driver's license
• an up-to-date photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometrics-compatible, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format)
• Proof of vision according to the model of Annex 6 No. 2 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. You can have the certificate issued by an ophthalmologist, a company or occupational physician or a doctor from the health department. An issued expert opinion/certificate is valid for 2 years.
• Proof of physical and mental fitness according to the model of Annex 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance. You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. At the time of application, the certificate must not be older than one year.
• In addition, for classes D, D1, DE, D1E, if you have reached the age of 50, a performance psychology report. The proof must not be older than one year at the time of application. You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. At the time of application, the certificate must not be older than one year.

• You will need to prove your eyesight and provide a medical certificate of physical and mental fitness to drive trucks.
• In the case of D-classes, you must also present a certificate of good conduct. If you are over 50 years old, you must also submit a performance psychology report for D-classes.

You must submit an application to the relevant driving licence authority.

The application can be submitted at the earliest six months before the expiry of the period of validity of the previous driving licence.

Please note: If the application is made after the expiry of the validity period of the previous driving licence, there will no longer be an extension, but a new driving licence will be issued. The fact that you were already the holder of a corresponding driving licence in the past is no longer clear from the new driving licence.

Regardless of whether it is a real renewal or a new issue (due to late application), a new driving licence is always issued.
