Applying for an electronic residence permit (eAT)
Description
From 01.09.2011 you will receive the residence title in the form of a credit card with additional electronic functions. Infants and children also receive their own card. Inside the card, the eAT has a contactless chip. It stores
- biometric features (photo, from 6 years 2 fingerprints),
- Ancillary provisions in connection with the residence permit (e.g. conditions) and
- personal data.
The eAT comprises the following residence permits:
- Residence permit
- Settlement permit
- Permit for permanent residence-EU
- Residence card for third-country nationals who are family members of nationals of an EU or EEA country
- Permanent residence card for third-country nationals who are family members of EU or EEA nationals
- Residence permit for Swiss citizens and their family members from third countries, if they opt for an eAT
- Electronic residence permit(Federal Office for Migration and Refugees)

Procedure
You can use the electronic residence title like the new identity card for German citizens. Detailed information on the electronic use of the card can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
You must apply for the electronic residence permit in person at the competent authority. It captures your fingerprints on site. Children aged 6 and over must also give their fingerprints.
