Supplementary rehabilitation benefits for people with health insurance

Health insurance covers the costs of supplementary rehabilitation services that can help you to recover more quickly.

You can receive supplementary rehabilitation benefits in addition to medical rehabilitation. You can also receive supplementary benefits without having previously undergone rehabilitation. Your health insurance fund will grant you supplementary rehabilitation benefits

• according to medical necessity and
• on a doctor's orders.

Supplementary benefits include, for example

• Patient training for the chronically ill, such as:
  • outpatient asthma training programs,
  • obesity training programs,
• rehabilitation sports and functional training,
• socio-medical aftercare measures for chronically ill or seriously ill children and young people.
• The services must be medically necessary and prescribed by a doctor.
  

The responsibility lies with the health insurance companies.

• Application to your health insurance company for supplementary rehabilitation benefits
• Prescription or statement from your attending physician
  

• The attending physician must prescribe the treatment.
• Your health insurance fund must have already provided or still provide health treatment.

• Appeal against the decision of the health insurance fund
• Complaint to the competent social court
  

• As a rule, your doctor will issue you with a prescription for supplementary rehabilitation services.
• You then submit the application and the prescription to your health insurance company.
• If your health insurance company covers the costs, you will receive a confirmation of costs from the health insurance company.
