Report change of personal data for BAföG repayment

Have you received educational support under BAföG with a loan component? Then you must inform the Federal Office of Administration, which collects the loan, of any changes to your home address and name.

You can apply for and receive training support in accordance with the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) from your local training assistance office.

The Federal Office of Administration (BVA) in Cologne is responsible for repaying the BAföG loan after your studies. For this purpose, the offices for educational support transfer your data to the BVA. The BVA creates an electronic file and sets up your loan account. You will not start repaying the loan until 5 years after the end of the maximum funding period, which generally corresponds to the standard period of study.

To ensure that your assessment and repayment notice can be sent to you, you must notify the BVA if your details change, even after your educational support has ended. This concerns

• Name
• Residential address; also if, for example, the street in which you live is renamed
• Changes in income if you are exempt from the repayment obligation

You can report your changes via the BAföG-Online portal.

If you fail to report the change, you will have to pay a fee of EUR 25.00.

• Communication

• You have received BAföG with a loan component.
• Your personal details change, for example:
• You are exempt from the repayment obligation and your income changes.
  • Your name or
  • Your home address
• You are exempt from the repayment obligation and your income changes.

• Contradiction

You can submit your changed data to the Federal Office of Administration (BVA) via the BAföG online portal.

• Go to the BAföG online portal of the BVA. You can use the portal
  • with your e-mail address and password
  • or with the online ID function via the electronic ID card (eID).
• If you want to use the portal with an e-mail address and password:
  • Register.
  • You will receive a confirmation by e-mail. Follow the steps in the e-mail to complete the registration.
  • Once you have successfully registered, you can log in with your e-mail address and password.
  • Complete the change notification online.
• If you want to use the portal with the online ID function, your ID card must be activated for this.
  • Select "Log in with ID card function".
  • Follow the steps to log in.
  • Update your data currently stored in the BVA

The following information is required if you move house, change your address, get married or divorced:

• Surname and, if applicable, previous name
• First name
• Date of birth
• If there has been any correspondence with the BVA: reference number
• Funding number, for example from the last BAföG notification
• Address and, if applicable, previous address

Processing usually takes a few days.

If you fail to notify the BVA of changes to your name or address, the lump sum for the cost of determining your address is EUR 25.00.: Fee 25,00 EUR

If you report changes, there are no costs.: Fee free of charge
