Apply for authorization for airworthiness personnel acting on their own behalf (IARS)

If you wish to act as airworthiness personnel in your own name, you can apply for, extend or renew your authorization (IARS authorization) under certain conditions.

With the IARS authorization (Independent Airworthiness Review Staff), you can carry out activities as airworthiness personnel acting on your own behalf. When you first apply for the rating, you also apply to register for the necessary examinations.

You also have the option of extending or renewing an existing authorization.

When applying, you provide data on the applicant and your valid Part 66 license.

The Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) is responsible for the application, extension or renewal of the IARS authorization.

You can apply for IARS authorization online via the federal portal.

for the issuance:

• current valid license according to Part-66
• Proof of reliability

for the extension or renewal:

• Overview of the airworthiness reviews carried out in the last authorization period and
• Copies of the airworthiness review certificates issued

In the case of representation:

• Proof of authorization to represent (power of attorney)
• for an address abroad:
• Declaration on the appointment of an authorized recipient

Please note:

You do not have to submit certain documents at the time of application - you can submit these documents later.

Which documents are required in your case

• You are a natural person (from Germany, an EU country or a third country).
• You are of legal age. This means that you are capable of acting, have full legal capacity and are criminally liable.
• You are reliable in accordance with the Aviation Security Act (LuftSiG).
• You have reached the minimum age at the time of application (18 years).
• No criminal proceedings must be pending against you.
• To obtain the authorization for the first time, you must successfully complete the following examinations after submitting your application:
  • a written examination (MCQ),
  • an oral examination (technical interview) and
  • a practical examination (ARC under supervision).

Note: You must have a valid Part 66 license by the time you take the exam at the latest.

• Contradiction

You must apply for, extend or renew the authorization for airworthiness personnel at the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA). Please proceed as follows:

Online application:

• Go to the federal portal verwaltung.bund.de and complete the online application.
• You can upload your documents directly.
• Submit the application online.
• The LBA will check your application.
• Once the LBA has processed the application, the applicant will be invited to an examination
• After the examination, you will receive a decision and a fee notice.
• After you have paid the fees, you can retrieve the decision and receive the documents.

Notes on the initial issue:

• You can submit the data for your valid Part 66 license up to the start of the examination at the latest.
• You decide whether you would like to be registered for the next possible examination date or whether you would like to take an alternative examination date.
• You then decide how you would like to provide proof of reliability and submit the required documents.
• After processing by the LBA, you will receive a summons to the theoretical examination when you are first issued.
• The examination with multiple-choice questions takes place in Braunschweig.
• With the positive result of the theoretical examination, you will also receive an invitation to the technical interview and the airworthiness test under supervision For the subsequent examination, you will receive an examination invitation after the dates have been agreed.
• You will be informed of the result of the examination orally immediately after the examination. If the result is positive, you will also receive notification on site.

Notes on extension or renewal:

• Provide an overview of the airworthiness reviews carried out in the last authorization period and copies of the airworthiness review certificates issued.
• If you wish to provide the original extract from the driving aptitude register and the police clearance certificate (paper document) as proof of reliability, you are obliged to send the original documents to the LBA by post.
• During the application process, you can add missing information and submit missing documents. The missing information and documents must be submitted by the time you start the examination at the latest.

- You will receive a notification of fees for costs incurred in connection with the performance of examinations and inspections for the granting of the permit and must pay the fees incurred. - You must pay travel and accommodation costs and other expenses incurred in connection with the performance of examinations and inspections for the issue of the permit yourself.: Fee from 100,00 EUR to 700,00 EUR
